Five miles from the south entrance to Yosemite National Park, within the park boundaries, is the quiet, quaint community of Wawona. This was the first stopping place for the earliest stage coach visitors to this wondrous area. The historic Wawona Hotel, built in the 1890's, serves as a reminder of days gone by.
The old pioneer village, which features rustic homes and pioneer activities, runs along the south fork of the Merced River. It is here that you can horseback ride, enjoy a ranch-style cookout, ride in an old stagecoach, or square dance in the barn. From this special area, it is an easy drive to the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoia trees, Badger Pass ski area, Glacier Point and the Valley floor.
